  • Penelope Cruz on her ballet dancer days

    Penelope Cruz has spoken of the days when she dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer.

    The Oscar-winning actress, 35, has revealed as a child she had no ambition to become a movie star.

    Cruz won her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona but says ballet was her first goal.

    She revealed: “I still can’t believe that I won the Oscar last year because of the way I grew up.

    “Just to dream about becoming an actress and making a living out of that sounded like science fiction in my environment. You know, I come from a family where we had just what we needed to survive. So to dream about this type of job was crazy.”

    Cruz studied for more than 10 years as a ballerina before turning to acting and still says she has a passion for dance.

    She said of ballet: “I wish I could do that. Oh, my God. Nothing harder than that I think.”

    Cruz added her dance training helped her land Hollywood roles.

    She said: “If I hadn’t had the discipline of all those years in the dance world, it would have been much, much tougher.

    “I mean, it goes too far sometimes. I mean, I used to take my toenails – they would die from dancing – so I would just take the whole toenail and throw it away, and not feel anything.

    “But I loved it.”

  • Life’s a breeze at 40 for Matthew McConaughey

    Matthew McConaughey is easing into the prime of his life.

    Turning 40, the actor said on his MySpace page: “The 30s were good to me and I’m really looking forward to my 40s, ’cause I’m a late bloomer. Got everything I need for a perfect 40th – a happy and healthy lady, son, and another baby on the way.”

    Indeed. McConaughey, who once dated Penelope Cruz, put on a monster bash to fete the milestone. Guests, who partied until after 4am, were treated to a performance by country musician Jamey Johnson.

    McConaughey in his recap said: “There were some epic stories told, lot of laughs and definitely some roasting. Somehow, no blood or glass broken.”

    The good ol’ Texan boy added he was planning to spend “some more time with my family and friends today, grillin’ steaks and sippin’ beers, celebratin’ more to live for”.

    Actress Penelope Cruz says she is a “worrier”.

    The Spanish beauty has revealed that she has to keep busy or she starts to panic about her life.

    Cruz, whose is currently dating actor Javier Bardem, 40, admits that she doesn’t like to be doing nothing.

    The Vicky Cristina Barcelona star told Vanity Fair magazine: “I’ve always been a worrier. Since I was a little girl I’ve always felt that if I had a moment of peace I’d wonder, ‘Are you sure you can afford to feel like this?’ ”

    The 35-year-old also discussed how she learned to act when she was young observing women been pampered in her hometown of Alcobendas, Spain.

    Penelope said: “It was my first acting school. I would pretend to be doing my homework, but I was really observing the women. I found their behaviour mesmerising – what they were hiding, how they left feeling a little different after they’d been helped to become a little more like whom they wanted to look like. They treated the place a little bit like a psychologist’s office. They would share all their secrets.”

  • Penelope Cruz gets another prize for Vicky Cristina Barcelona

    Spanish actress Penelope Cruz has picked up another prize for movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona by winning an ALMA award.

    Penelope, 35, stars in the Woody Allen-directed flick along with boyfriend Javier Bardem, 40, and Scarlett Johansson, 24.

    She has now picked up the film actress award at the 2009 ALMA awards, which recognise those Hispanic artists’ achievements in film, TV and music.

    Other gongs given out at the bash include movie Nothing Like The Holidays, starring Debra Messing, which won three prizes, including film actor of the year for John Leguizamo.

    Ugly Betty star Salma Hayek also received the Anthony Quinn Award for Industry Excellence and Rita Moreno presented a tribute to late star Ricardo Montalban.

  • ‘Workaholic’ Penelope Cruz’s parents urged her to slow down

    Spanish actress Penelope Cruz said her parents urged her to slow down as she used to be a “total workaholic”.

    Cruz, 35, is starring in Pedro Almodovar’s new movie Broken Embraces and she has previously admitted that she suffered a breakdown when she was 17 after working too hard.

    Cruz said that over the last two years she has created “a much better equilibrium between work and time” for her life.

    She added to British newspaper The Times: “I can rest, go travelling, have time to do nothing. Before I might take 15 days off in a year and try to leave my BlackBerry in my room to please my family.

    “I was a total workaholic. I think that’s what I needed to do then. Now I can work, but I’m not on movie sets the whole year. I can say no until there is something I really need to do.”

    The actress has recently admitted to having a great fondness for Guiness. Penelope Cruize said this about the Irish drink: “I really like Guinness. I always drink it straight from the bottle. I have a lot of Irish friends and they introduced me to it. Although I like it if I have one I’m drunk!” Of course Penelope Cruz likes an Irish drink… everybody likes an Irish drink, the Irish are most experienced in the manufacture and consumption of fine drinks. However, Penelope Cruz has the advantage over the Irish since it only takes one Guiness to make her happy.

  • Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem


    The couple has recently come to a standstill as far as sources report to the press. This happened because Javier couldn’t resist staring in a new film, even though he and Penelope agreed to take time off from acting in order to spend much more time together. The interesting part is that Penelope’s brother Eduardo mentioned the following fact: “She admires Angelina Jolie and has always said she wants to do the same thing. She wants to adopt an Indian child when the time comes.” This can’t be good. Another brooding gig… they just seem to keep multiplying at an alarming rate. But thank God for small favors as Javier’s little acting hunger may very well cost him their relationship.
